Heartland Pinot Grigio 2009

All Heartland wines are made by Ben Glaetzer with fruit from our mature vineyards at Langhorne Creek & Limestone Coast in South Australia

Variety: Pinot Grigio 92%, Viognier 8%

Region: Langhorne Creek 93%, Limestone Coast 7%

Tasting notes:

Pale lemon green in colour, the 09 Pinot Grigio displays an attractive nose with hints of melon, pear and apple blossom. The palate is fresh and lively with a touch of spice and citrus.
The tannin of Pinot Grigio adds firmness and structure to the palate. A hint of Viognier contributes to the luscious mouthfeel.
Sumptuous fruit flavours are balanced by a crisp, dry, flinty finish making it the perfect accompaniment to richly flavoured foods. Dry, medium-bodied and unoaked.

Vinification:

Both varieties were vinified separately, with four harvest dates to provide contrasting levels of ripeness. The pinot grigio underwent a short period of skin contact to enhance the palate structure. The viognier was crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. Cool ferment in stainless steel was followed by lees stirring and cold stabilisation. Bottled early to retain aromatics and freshness.

2009 vintage:

Langhorne Creek experienced a well-paced season with excellent conditions for ripening resulting in good flavour development and intensity. White varieties fared well this year with good crop levels. Overall, the 2009 Langhorne Creek vintage has been one of low yields but good quality. Limestone Coast experienced a dry vintage with minimal rain from January-March. Yields across the Limestone Coast were up slightly on 2008.
